A love for trains is nearly universal for little boys. Here are some great spots to check out in San Diego (and not too far from San Diego) for the little train lover in your life.

Balboa Park Miniature Train - San Diego

Since it’s been around since 1948, multiple generations of San Diegans have enjoyed this miniature train near the entrance to the San Diego Zoo. The half-mile ride takes you through two tunnels and past the carousel that’s also worth checking out.

Poway-Midland Railroad - Poway

Old Poway Park is a hidden gem in San Diego for trains. Different full-sized trains run each weekend on the track that travels through the park. They’ve done a great job of recreating a train station setting and one of the best parts is grabbing a meal at the Hamburger Factory restaurant right next to the “station.”

Pacific Southwest Railway Museum - Campo

If you’re up for a bit of a drive, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo is a great spot. You’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back in time to experience open country and trains. Be sure to check out the special train rides for Easter, Halloween and the always popular Polar Express ride leading up to Christmas. But check it out early because they can sell out!

Orange Empire Railway Museum - Perris

A little outside of San Diego, but if you’ve got a train lover, YOU MUST CHECK THIS PLACE OUT that has the largest collection of trains in the west. And perhaps the best part is that you can wander the grounds for FREE! There is a charge to go on train rides, but there’s no cost to park or get in to see and touch dozens of different kinds of trains dating back to the late 1800’s.
